Lifelong Art Lover Finds Perfect Home at Edgemere

For Mary Lou Tosques, life has always been enriched by the arts. From her early years in New York, when her father introduced her to opera, theater, and literature, to 15 years spent building a fine arts lecture and tour company in Sarasota, Fla., Tosques has always sought a life full of meaning, beauty, and connection. When the time came to move closer to her son and his wife in Dallas, she knew she wanted a community that would not only feel like home but also support her passions and well-being.

“Before finally choosing Edgemere, I had made a commitment to a different community,” Tosques recalls. “I’d fly in from Florida, but my appointments with in-house contractors and management were not being kept, and I finally walked away from it. That’s no way to run an operation.” Then, I visited Edgemere, where the sales team was organized and solicitous — rearranging their schedules to meet with me on very short notice. I felt that that was a good indication of the community’s level of service, responsiveness, and hospitality.”

Edgemere’s overall atmosphere was another deciding factor. “As I walked through, it just felt welcoming — warm, elegant, and full of life. Edgemere stood apart. The art on the walls, the architecture, the vibrant mix of residents from across the country, and the friendly, engaged staff created an environment where I could see myself thriving.”

A Community that Supports Every Dimension of Life

At Edgemere, wellness is about more than exercise or healthy meals—it’s a holistic approach that nurtures mind, body, and spirit. Tosques has discovered how naturally the community’s six wellness pillars—emotional, physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, and occupational—are woven into daily life.

Intellectual Wellness: As a lifelong lover of the arts, Tosques treasures Edgemere’s Tuesday performances and lectures. From Broadway-style concerts to discussions of current events, these programs fuel her curiosity and keep her deeply engaged. “I’ve always believed in continuous learning,” she says. “Here, I find stimulation for both the mind and the spirit.”

Spiritual Wellness: Tosques enjoys the community’s monthly lectures, such as those exploring the world’s religions, which connect back to her lifelong appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. Edgemere also offers services for various faiths, a grief support group, meditation, and tai chi.

Physical Wellness: After overcoming a foot injury earlier this year, she’s grateful for Edgemere’s fitness and wellness opportunities, from croquet and ping pong to exercise classes and swimming. “There is such a variety here — you can always find something that helps you stay active,” she says.

Social & Emotional Wellness: Moving to Dallas meant a new chapter in her life, but Edgemere quickly made her feel at home. “The people I’ve met here have been a joy to be with,” Tosques shares. “There’s always someone to talk to, laugh with, or share a meal alongside.”

Occupational Wellness: Tosques still runs her Sarasota-based fine arts lecture company and continues to prepare research and presentations. “I love that I can continue this work while being part of such a dynamic community.” Edgemere also offers art classes, resident committees, and volunteering opportunities to help support a purpose-driven lifestyle.

Creating a True Home

For Tosques, home is also about personal space—and she’s made her Edgemere apartment a reflection of her life’s journey. Filled with eclectic and ethnic art collected from her travels across Africa, South America, and Asia, her residence is both welcoming and deeply personal. “When I walk into my apartment, I breathe a little easier,” she says. “It feels like me. Every piece is a memory. Once my art was up on the walls, I knew I was home.”

A Bright New Chapter

Eight months after her move, Tosques is still settling into her new rhythm but is certain she made the right decision. “I’m currently in my business’s busy season, but soon my schedule will open up and I’m excited to really start exploring the offerings here.” Between Dallas’ thriving arts scene, Edgemere’s full calendar of wellness opportunities, and the friendships she’s forming, she has so much to look forward to.

“My life here is the beginning of a new chapter,” Tosques reflects. “And I know it’s going to be a really good one.”
