500 People Expected at 2nd Annual Dallas Walk for Parkinson’s on Saturday, April 11

Free event hosted by Edgemere and Dallas Area Parkinson Society (DAPS)

DALLAS, TX – March 23, 2026– The public is invited to join a stroll like no other, as an estimated 500 family members join their loved ones in solidarity during the 2nd Annual Dallas Walk for Parkinson’s just one year after the event originated.

“We honestly didn’t know what to expect last year when we partnered with the Dallas Area Parkinson Society to create this walk in support of the 15,000 people living with Parkinson’s Disease in North Texas,” said Teresa Bates, Executive Director of Edgemere senior living community, the first Certified Parkinson Disease Care community in Texas. “Together, our organizations poured our hearts into creating a day full of beauty and love, and the Dallas community responded incredibly. We can’t wait to do it again!”

“It is an emotional but incredibly uplifting day that’s nothing short of tremendous, and we are thrilled to be continuing this strong partnership of hope that ultimately helps the entire North Texas Parkinson’s community,” said Leisha Phipps, Executive Director of the Dallas Area Parkinson Society (DAPS).

Registration is open now for this pet-friendly event as families, friends, neighbors and community partners come together to raise awareness, show support and stand strong for those living with the fastest-growing neurological disease.

From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 11th, at Edgemere senior living at 8523 Thackery Street in Dallas, participants will enjoy live music from the Honeybutton Band, games and entertainment for children, raffle prizes and the powerful experience of walking alongside others who understand the challenges and resilience that come with Parkinson’s. CBS Texas Reporter/anchor Amelia Mugavero will emcee the wheelchair-accessible walk featuring evenly paved routes, resting stations, complimentary water and refreshments and shuttle assistance from nearby parking at Park Cities Baptist Church. The Dallas Area Parkinson Society (DAPS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit started in 1978 by a care partner whose husband had been struggling with Parkinson’s for several years. 48 years later, it continues to provide support, education and exercise to individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their families, at no cost.

“My wife had Parkinson’s for 15 years, and it just slowly got worse and worse. Three years ago, it reached a point where she couldn’t live independently and that’s why we moved here to Edgemere,” said Dick Hartman, Edgemere resident.

Every 9 minutes, someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, according to the Parkinson’s Foundation, and an estimated 4,000 individuals in Dallas and 15,000 people in North Texas are living with the disease.

Edgemere is proud to be the first senior living community in Texas recognized as a Certified Parkinson Disease Care™ (CPDC) facility, meaning every team member — from caregivers and fitness professionals to dining staff and concierges — has completed specialized Parkinson’s training.

“This approach helps staff recognize symptoms, understand medication timing and therapy needs, and provide day-to-day support with empathy and expertise,” said Bates. “Dedicated CPDC Advocates further reinforce best practices and person-centered care throughout the community.”

Edgemere also provides classes that help residents living with Parkinson’s maintain mobility, confidence and social connection. Popular offerings include weekly boxing sessions that support motor control and stamina, cardio drumming classes that encourage rhythmic movement and energy, and aquatic therapy that eases stiffness and improves joint flexibility.

“Exercising side-by-side helps residents living with and without Parkinson’s to maintain and build all-important social ties, too, as they encourage and support each other,” says Bates.

Residents with Parkinson’s also benefit from individualized care plans that integrate fitness, cognitive engagement, and therapeutic services to promote long-term independence. The campus is designed to allow couples and loved ones to remain close, with independent living residences located just steps from The Plaza, the community’s health center offering assisted living and memory care as well as the new, innovative sensory room, which provides a calming and adaptive environment.
