Step Up for Hope at the Second Annual Dallas Walk for Parkinson’s on April 11

More than 15,000 people in North Texas are currently living with Parkinson’s — and that number continues to rise.

Please join us on Saturday, April 11, as families, friends, neighbors, and community partners come together to raise awareness, show support, and stand strong for those living with the fastest-growing neurological disease at the Second Annual Dallas Walk for Parkinson’s, hosted by Dallas Area Parkinson Society and Edgemere, Dallas’s premier destination for vibrant, luxurious 55+ living.

From 8 to 10 a.m. at 8523 Thackery Street in Dallas, participants will enjoy live music from the Honeybutton Band, games and entertainment for children, raffle prizes, and the powerful experience of walking alongside others who understand the challenges and resilience that come with Parkinson’s. CBS Texas Anchor/Reporter Amelia Mugavero will emcee.

This wheelchair-accessible walk features evenly paved routes, resting stations, complimentary water and refreshments, and shuttle assistance from nearby parking at Park Cities Baptist Church. Leashed pets are welcome.

A Community that Supports People Living with Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s doesn’t affect individuals alone — it touches entire families and social circles. Community events like the Dallas Walk for Parkinson’s create space for shared encouragement, meaningful conversations, and renewed optimism. They also help raise awareness about the importance of proactive wellness, specialized support, and accessible resources.

That spirit of connection is something Edgemere fosters every day.

At the distinguished senior living community set in the heart of Preston Hollow, wellness is more than a philosophy — it’s a comprehensive, campus-wide commitment. Edgemere is proud to be the first senior living community in Texas recognized as a Certified Parkinson Disease Care™ (CPDC) facility, meaning every team member — from caregivers and fitness professionals to dining staff and concierges — has completed specialized Parkinson’s training.

“This approach helps staff recognize symptoms, understand medication timing and therapy needs, and provide day-to-day support with empathy and expertise,” explains Executive Director Teresa Bates. “Dedicated CPDC Advocates further reinforce best practices and person-centered care throughout the community.”

Programs That Encourage Strength, Independence, and Joy

Edgemere’s vibrant wellness programming includes classes that help residents living with Parkinson’s maintain mobility, confidence, and social connection. Popular offerings include weekly boxing sessions that support motor control and stamina, cardio drumming classes that encourage rhythmic movement and energy, and aquatic therapy that eases stiffness and improves joint flexibility.

While designed with Parkinson’s in mind, these programs are inclusive — residents of all ability levels are encouraged to participate, creating shared experiences that support body, mind, and spirit.

“Exercising side-by-side helps residents living with and without Parkinson’s to maintain and build all-important social ties, too, as they encourage and support each other,” says Bates.

Residents with Parkinson’s also benefit from individualized care plans that integrate fitness, cognitive engagement, and therapeutic services to promote long-term independence. The thoughtful campus design allows couples and loved ones to remain close, with independent living residences located just steps from The Plaza, the community’s health center offering assisted living and memory care.

In The Plaza, individuals with movement disorders and cognitive challenges can take full advantage of the new, innovative sensory room, which provides a calming and adaptive environment.
