After living on three continents, raising a family across multiple countries, and building a life filled with travel and adventure, Beth and Ivan Becka could have chosen almost anywhere to spend their retirement years.
Eight years ago, they chose Edgemere.
Today, as Ivan recovers successfully from a recent fall with a rehabilitation stay at The Plaza at Edgemere, Beth says their decision has proven to be one of the best they have ever made.
Choosing Edgemere
Unlike many older adults who move to a senior living community after a health event or life change, the Beckas made their move proactively.
“We did it on our own so that we could enjoy everything Edgemere offers, while looking ahead to what we might need later,” Beth says.
The couple’s journey to Dallas was anything but ordinary.
Ivan, a chemical engineer and businessman originally from Prague, spent his career helping launch chemical plants around the world. His work took the family to France, Germany, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Mexico. Along the way, the Beckas raised three children, creating a truly international family experience. Two of their children were born in Mexico City, and all three grew up bilingual or trilingual.
After eventually settling in San Antonio for two decades, the couple began thinking about their next chapter.
“We knew Dallas,” Beth says. “All our children have lived here at some point.”
The Beckas explored several senior living communities. Their children did research as well, offering recommendations. But after touring Edgemere and comparing it to other options, the choice became clear.
“Edgemere is the real thing,” she says. “The quality is top-notch. The apartments are wonderful. The food is excellent. The people are excellent. Everything is run very well.”
Originally interested in a two-bedroom home, they soon discovered that their one-bedroom apartment suited them perfectly, with its large floorplan. “No two-bedroom homes were available when we moved. Later, when one opened up down the hall, we decided to stay.”
It wasn’t just the beautiful campus or amenities that impressed her.
“The residents are interesting people. We’ve met wonderful friends here,” she explains.
An Active and Engaged Lifestyle
The Beckas embraced community life from the beginning. Fitness classes became part of their routine. They attended educational programs and current events discussions. They built friendships with neighbors who shared their curiosity about the world and enjoyment of meaningful conversation.
“We enjoy talking with people. We don’t just sit around talking about ailments,” Beth laughs. “We talk about life, current events, ideas, and experiences.”
The couple also discovered that life at Edgemere made everyday living easier and more enjoyable. Although their apartment includes a spacious kitchen, they rarely cook.
“We enjoy going down to the restaurants,” she says. “Why spend three days making a complicated meal when you can come downstairs and enjoy wonderful food and wonderful company?”
Over time, Beth became even more involved in community life by serving as a building representative. In that volunteer role, she welcomes new residents, answers questions, delivers holiday treats, and helps newcomers feel connected.
“If somebody is new, you greet them and help them feel comfortable,” she says. “You answer questions and help them get settled.”
The volunteer role allows her to help strengthen the sense of connection that defines life at Edgemere.
Finding Comfort During a Health Challenge
Recently, the Beckas experienced another side of Edgemere’s continuum of care.
After Ivan broke his hip, he was hospitalized before moving into The Plaza at Edgemere temporarily for rehabilitation and care.
While any health setback can be stressful, Beth says one thing made the situation much easier.
“We already knew exactly where we were going,” she says. “That is such a comfort.”
Instead of researching rehabilitation facilities, coordinating transportation, or worrying about distance, the couple remained on the campus they already called home.
“It is wonderful to know that if something happens, you’re right here,” she says.
For nearly two months, Ivan has received therapy, nursing support, and medical care at The Plaza while recovering. Meanwhile, Beth has chosen to be by his side. “I come in the morning to be with my husband and then I leave in the evening,” she says. “I simply walk through the hallway back to our apartment. It’s very handy.”
Confidence in The Plaza
Throughout Ivan’s recovery, Beth has been consistently impressed with the care team.
“The nurses and staff have been very responsible and very good,” she says. “We’re very pleased with everybody.”
She also appreciates the quality of the accommodations and services available at The Plaza, including private rooms, skilled nursing care, physical therapy, and specialized support.
“Everything has been very fine,” she says. “The food is very good. The staff is very good.”
The experience has reinforced her appreciation for the comprehensive services available at Edgemere. “We’re very complete here,” she says.

As Ivan prepares to return home, Beth finds herself reflecting on what eight years at Edgemere have meant for their family.
The community has provided friendship, activities, dining, wellness programs, volunteer opportunities, and a beautiful place to live. Just as importantly, it has provided peace of mind.
The Beckas moved to Edgemere hoping to find a community that could support them through every stage of retirement. When an unexpected health challenge arrived, they discovered firsthand the value of that decision.
