Frequently Asked Skilled Nursing Questions.
What is skilled nursing?
It’s when an older adult needs care provided around-the-clock by medical professionals. Generally speaking, an older adult or their caregiver may opt for skilled nursing services if their health requires constant professional medical attention. For example, if an individual has an ongoing health condition or permanent disability, a team of nurses develops a personalized care plan to ensure their needs are met on a daily basis.
How does skilled nursing differ from assisted living?
-
Assisted living residents are provided help, as needed, with activities of daily living, which can include basic healthcare needs
-
Skilled nursing residents are provided 24/7 care for an individual’s health, medical, and personal needs
The difference between assisted living and skilled nursing, as you can see, is the level of care. In an assisted living community, residents get help at points throughout the day with various tasks, like medication management, getting dressed, or other necessary activities. Within a skilled nursing environment, licensed medical professionals care for the resident around the clock.
When is skilled nursing necessary?
Skilled nursing is appropriate for people with medical needs requiring specialized care and monitoring at all times. Most often, candidates for long-term skilled nursing have an ongoing health condition or permanent disability. They may be affected by chronic illness or the natural symptoms of advanced age.
Are there enrichment opportunities for skilled nursing residents?
Absolutely. Based on their abilities, skilled nursing residents can choose from a full calendar of interesting and stimulating opportunities, including cultural and social events — the same ones available to independent living and assisted living residents at Edgemere.
Is short-term skilled nursing available at Edgemere?
Yes. Short-term skilled nursing is available for those recovering from illness, injury, surgery, or stroke who need intensive therapy and want to regain optimal well-being and health.
Does Medicare pay for skilled nursing?
Yes. With a qualifying hospital stay, Medicare covers days one through 20 of skilled nursing and rehabilitation. A Medicare-set daily coinsurance rate is assessed for days 21 through 100. Medicare payment rules are stringent and vary depending on a number of factors. Your out-of-pocket expense may vary based on any additional supplemental insurance coverage you may have. Visit Medicare’s Skilled Nursing page and be sure to check with your plan details for more.
